チェス
チェス (chess) は、二人で行なうボードゲームの一種である。ゲーム理論の二人零和有限確定完全情報ゲームに分類される。世界中で広く楽しまれており、チェス同様チャトランガに起源を持つ将棋やシャンチーなど類似のゲーム類で最も遊戯人口が多いだけでなく、カードゲームなども含めたゲーム全般においてもブリッジと並んで最も多く遊ばれている。
遊戯としての側面の他に、近代オリンピックの正式種目であるなど、スポーツとしての側面も持つ。競技としてのチェスは、頭脳によるスポーツの代表格でもある。
西洋将棋の呼びかたもあるが、チェスが将棋のバリエーションの一つとの誤解を生みかねないこと、「西洋」という限定が世界中で広く遊ばれているチェスの実態にそぐわないこと、そして何より「チェス」という名称が一般化したことなどから、今日ではあまり使われていない。
