Et voici venir le retour des carrés noirs, après le succès incontesté de "Make the girl dance - Baby baby baby", le nouveau projet de Fat Boy Slim (Norman Cook) intitulé The BPA devrait faire rapidement grand bruit sur la toile, jugez plutot : Des filles et des hommes nus se trémoussant dans une vidéo digne des années 70, couverts par des carrés noirs très agités. Illegal downloads, the winner is...
Which country is the champion of illegal downloads ? This is a common question nowadays and many things have been said, and their contrary as well.
It has been said that France would have been the champion of illegal downloads these last years (the law Hadopi arrived to save the entertainment industry), but according to certain sources, less than 1 french connected to the internet out of 5 would download music & films illegally, just like in United States or United Kingdom.
China would be the real champion of illegal downloads with more than 3 chinese people connected out of 4, followed by Russia, India, Spain, Brazil...
There is no easy way to verify such numbers but as direct downloads, most probably of copyrighted music & films, from sites like Megauplod, Rapidshare, Uploading.to, Hotfiles (and so on) are now more and more popular, you may have an idea (but for China which is a special case due to internet filters most probably applied by the government) by looking these Traffic stats by country provided by the Alexa toolbar :

Of course you may look at the traffic stats for every website that is about direct downloads or P2P. These numbers should be taken with moderation, everyone do not use the Alexa toolbar, but these numbers give undoubtly a clue on which country uses these websites most.
As for me, the conclusion I would roughly make while taking account of what internet looks like & the people in each country is that the number of direct downloads in United States, China or France, is basically the same in percentage !

Quel pays est le champion du piratage et plus précisément du téléchargement illégal ? La question a souvent été posée depuis quelques années et on a entendu tout et son contraire.
Il a été dit que la France avait été le pays champion du téléchargement illégal (avant que la loi Hadopi n'arrive pour sauver l'industrie du divertissement), mais selon certaines sources il n'en serait rien, moins d'un français sur 5 téléchargerait illégalement alors que plus de 3 chinois sur 4 le feraient, rien de forcément étonnant pour le pays champion de la contrefaçon.
La Chine serait ainsi suivi de la Russie, de l'Inde, de l'Espagne et du Brésil.
Il n'y a pas de moyen facile de vérifier de tels chiffres, mais à l'heure des téléchargements directs, de plus en plus populaires, à partir des sites Rapidshare, Megaupload, Hotfile, Uploading.to et ainsi de suite, certains chiffres peuvent nous donner une idée sur la question, notamment les statistiques de traffic en provenance du site Alexa (sauf peut-être pour la Chine, où le gouvernement applique sans doute des filtres pour de nombreux sites web) :

Le monde entier connait maintenant Susan Boyle, cette femme célibataire qui a surpris le jury de l'émission "Britain's Got Talent" et qui a été vue plus de cent millions de fois sur internet sur les plates-formes vidéo comme Youtube et Dailymotion.
Pourquoi tout le monde s'est passionné pour le destin de cette femme qui à priori n'avait rien d'extraordinaire ? Tout simplement parce qu'elle est le symbole, la preuve vivante irréfutable que tout est possible.

Like any other successful creation, Facebook has to face jealousy & imitations but this may be the way internet goes only : A few weblogs will always find a "Da Vinci Code"-like way to reveal a new 'scandal'. Facebook is the perfect victim, it most probably has lawyers who write as perfect as possible terms & conditions of use but it firstly has to protect itself when the principle of the website creates obvious problems by its content, mainly made of personal content.
The Facebook's terms of use :

Such titles then appeared in well known websites & newspapers and Facebook had to react quickly :

Quite funny after all, just one more viral hoax... Do you really think that Facebook would suicide by using any bad way your personal informations ? As for me I don't think so. Of course Facebook has to make money, it still loses several million dollars, but I have no doubt they will find a correct way.

Ce mois-ci, le buzz tourne à nouveau indéniablement autour de Facebook, le plus incontournable des réseaux sociaux. Le problème vient de ses termes et conditions d'utilisations, que certains sites n'hésitent pas à dénoncer dès lors que la moindre ligne change. Il est vrai que la question des données personnelles a toujours été et restera sensible tant internet s'est emparé de nos vies privées.
Pas un jour ne passe sans que se crée un nouveau groupe sur Facebook dénonçant ce genre de dangers et le principe même du site. Alors, Facebook victime de son succès, de la jalousie, de ses concurrents, ou est-ce simplement comme cela que fonctionne désormais internet ?
Faire du "buzz" est évidemment le moyen le plus sûr de rentabiliser un journal ou un site web, et certains n'hésiteront pas à trouver des défauts à quiconque en fait (façon pratique d'emprunter un peu de sa popularité), défauts démontrés par A+B façon "Da Vinci Code" là où bien sûr il n'y a souvent rien à trouver. Qui peut imaginer que Facebook ira utiliser des données personnelles d'une façon nuisible ? Ce serait tuer la poule aux oeufs d'or, il n'y a aucun intérêt à cela. Bien entendu Facebook a un sérieux problème, il n'est pas encore rentable, mais la société vaut plus d'un milliard de dollars, nul doute qu'ils trouveront un moyen, ce n'est qu'une question de temps.

Spam still makes money
Traffic from Google is an extremely valuable commodity and many webmasters will stop at nothing to secure top rankings for lucrative keywords. Google would like site owners to naturally link to other sites they find useful and relevant but some sites use methods discouraged by Google to artificially inflate the number of links pointing to the site in order to boost its positions.
This battle has been going on for years, with many sites continually inventing methods to improve their rankings for particular keywords and search engines repeatedly updating their algorithms to protect the quality of searches. A few years ago, oceanfinance.co.uk and moneyexpert.com had acquired millions of links to their site, enjoying long term success in manipulating Google’s results.
At this time moneyexpert.com no more sits atop of Google for highly rewarding keywords such as mortgages, loans and credit cards. But its number of backlinks according to Google link: function is still about 185,000
The Digital Point Coop network was launched in 2005 by Shawn Hogan from DP (Digital Point), it quickly expanded with thousands of sites.
In this network, advertisers create text or image ads that are placed across the thousands of sites in the network, publishers are given some php code that they embed on every page on their site. As the adverts are showed in rotation, the links may not appear more than once, but enough for search engines to see them.
Publishers are given "weight" that depends on how many pages the ads are displayed on and the PageRank of these pages. Thus, sites with strong PageRank and tens of thousands of indexed pages offer a huge amount of weight that the publisher can use to advertise any number of sites across the network.
The trick is that it is possible to run the adverts on a spam site, then use the weight to point links at a clean site to boost its rankings.
During 2006 it became obvious that hosting these adverts was a bad idea as some sites suffered ranking penalties because of the network and lost their PageRank. Also having several footer links to sites out of control is probably not a good way to build your brand.
People now buy high PageRank sites with thousands of pages just to gain more "weight" for their Coop networks or even rent "weight" to other people (probably like ZTMC).
Sites using DP coop network links to build rankings still dominate a lot of the most lucrative industries. Google started to crack down on link selling and other manipulative schemes, so the Coop (which follow the same idea than Text Link Ads or TNX) has been getting smaller, but the system still counts thousands of sites - some eventually cheat the system - and most probably a few making millions every year from this free network.

En 2006, il est devenu évident que publier ces liens était dangereux pour le classement d'un site, certains ayant subi de forts déclassements, voire perdu leur PageRank. Afficher des liens hors de contrôle est de toutes façons forcément dangereux.
Depuis, des webmasters achètent des sites ayant un fort PageRank et des milliers de pages pour acquérir du "poids" dans le réseau Coop, voire louent du poids à d'autres sites (probablement comme ZTMC).
Les sites utilisant le réseau DP coop pour construire leurs liens dominent encore beaucoup de secteurs lucratifs. Google a commencé à réduire l'impact de la vente des liens et de ces réseaux d'échange, et le réseau Coop (qui suit le même principe que Text Link Ads ou TNX) a perdu en taille, mais compte toujours des milliers de sites - dont certains étant parvenus à berner le système - et probablement quelques uns gagnant des millions chaque année grâce à ce réseau à la base gratuit.

Tout le monde a déjà reçu un courrier électronique lui annonçant une offre d'emploi, un gain à un jeu quelconque, un système d'affiliation pyramidal ou un nouveau type de virus. Souvent envoyé par un ami, le message est en général annoncé comme très urgent. Le réflexe premier est donc de renvoyer le message à toutes ses connaissances, qui feront à leur tour la même chose et ainsi de suite jusqu'à ce que le message fasse de nombreuses fois le tour du monde.
Vous vous êtes ainsi et comme beaucoup sans doute fait piéger, mais les hoax (canulars) ont des conséquences souvent bien plus graves. De l'atteinte à la vie privée en passant par les nombreux dérapages, les dangers sont très réels.
Ainsi si votre antivirus (par exemple AVG Antivirus) vous indique un nouveau problème au doux nom de EXPL_ANICMOO.GEN, ADW_AGENT.VJS, JS_DLOADER.NUF, WORM_NETSKY.P, POSSIBLE_MLWR-5, HTML_NETSKY.P, WORM_RBOT.APT, POSSIBLE_INFOSTL, WORM_NYXEM.E, POSSIBLE_NUCRP-3, il est plus que possible que vous ayiez cliqué sur un lien transmis par l'un de ces emails malveillants sans protection adaptée.

Blu-ray vs. HD DVD
According to Adams Media Research, about 32 million DVD players were sold in the U.S. last year. Of those, about 4%, or 1.5 million, were hi-def optical disc players: 578,000 Blu-ray Disc players and 370,000 HD-DVD players. Blu-ray has taken a decisive lead over HD DVD, the main movie studios, such as Warner Bros, Walt Disney, 20th Century Fox & MGM joined Blu-ray. HD-DVD players have more options, such as onboard flash memory and Internet connectivity, they are cheaper than Blu-ray players but the game seems already over. Anyway, many advise to buy any of these players at the moment, tomorrow may be yesterday already.

Internet Explorer 8 Beta 1
Microsoft will release IE 8 Beta 1 in the first half of 2008. Internet Explorer 8 would have passed a key web standards test, "Acid2 Browser Test" from the Web Standards Project. Older versions of IE don't support some current standards such as CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) and RSS (Really Simple Syndication), now it should work fine. It seems that the popularity of open-source browser Mozilla Firefox gave good intentions to Microsoft.

Then if you are a swindler, you may sell on your website a virtual ebook explaining your methods, for a bunch of dollars. The web and adsense ads are now full of examples, these great secrets about "How to get ranked number 1 in Google searches in 2 weeks", "How to increase your PageRank in 2 days", "How to get 1,000,000 backlinks free", "How to get 10,000 diggs a day", "Submit in 10,000,000 directories for free"... Magic, but how much time yet ?

Le web et les publicités Adsense regorgent de ces offres toutes plus alléchantes les unes que les autres, "Comment être classé numéro 1 dans Google en 2 semaines", "Comment augmenter son PageRank en deux jours", "Comment obtenir 1 million de liens gratuitement", "Comment obtenir 10,000 Diggs en un jour", "Comment soumettre son site à 10 millions d'annuaires"... Magique, mais pour combien de temps encore ?

Hollywood sue Chinese internet site
Jeboo.com and an Internet cafe in Shanghai have been sued by five Hollywood studios (Twentieth Century Fox, Walt Disney, Paramount Pictures, Columbia Pictures and Universal Studios) for a $432,000 compensation. They would have offered Pirates of the Caribbean, X-Men 2, Night at the Museum and other well known recent movies to download for free. Good luck to them ! (Hollywood studios of course, they will need it :))

Google to invade TV
Google would be in talks with Simon Fuller, the man behind the Spice Girls, about a joint venture that could change the way television is watched over the internet.
Of course Google's plans for the TV market may include generating original content and competing with major broadcasters, why not, just after the launch last year of Google Video, which offers full-length television programmes and films on a pay-per-view basis.

Google PageRank goes after paid links
The last update of famous Google's PageRank seems to go after sponsored links, a common way to obtain optimized backlinks on the internet to change Google rankings. Many famous websites like ie. Youtube saw its PageRank falling by several points, but no change would have occured in rankings, finally Youtube got back its PageRank.
Definitely, Pagerank is a perfect tool for Google to control the world wide web.

De nombreux sites célèbres comme Youtube ou Webrankinfo ont vu leur PageRank chuter de plusieurs points mais apparemment sans avoir affecté leur positionnement dans les pages de recherche. Peu de temps après, Youtube avait récupéré son PageRank.
