Comment by Thibault de Vassal :

---> TCCMB Exhibition Match <---

The story started on The Correspondence Chess Message Board when announcing the opening for the next (7th) FICGS thematic tournament :

Thibault : 1.Nf3 Nf6 2.d4 Ng8 3.e4 Nf6 4.Nc3 Ng8 ....... what do you think ? This is the opening of the next chess thematic tournament on FICGS... Now the question : Is it a lost position ?? Any opinion ?

John : Hi Thibault. Some possible names: "I think I can play chess but I am an idiot defense.", "Black is okay - until he gets crushed gambit.", "Knight Fixation Defense", "My horsey can think for himself defense.", "Tempo This Defense". To answer your question, a moderately clever monkey, while toying with a watch, could easily win this game as white.

Thibault : Hi John. You sure ? ;) Do we try ?! :)

John : Hi Thibault. Is that a challenge? If so, what are the stakes for the match?

Thibault : Hi John. Looks like one :) I propose a one game match. It seems to me that the stake is quite clear. But if you want something more.. some ideas : - No post on TCCMB during a full month. - Type a hundred times on TCCMB & FICGS forum : "I won't make stupid stakes anymore against [opponent]" .. both ? If you have other ideas ;)

John : Hi Thibault. I accept your challenge to a one game match, with me playing the white pieces, in the following thematic opening: 1 Nf3 Nf6 2 d4 Ng8 3 e4 Nf6 4 Nc3 Ng8 ... Let's just call it a "TCCMB Exhibition Match" since the idea originated here. Can you set it up on your server, and provide me with the URL? That way I can make a link to the game here. It would be important that everyone could view the game (spectate). How about a time control of 30+1, or faster if you like? Does that sound okay? Could be fun. Just let me know when it is ready.

Thibault : Hi John. That's okay for the time control 30+1. That's honour (yet) for me to play this game. It just started... Have fun :)

*******************************************

Black has no real choice in the opening, any move on the King side helps White to choose a quick attack. I probably played the best moves until 15. ... Bb7 ?! (maybe Ba6..) Anyway, 5 moves late is too much, it was certainly lost at move 4 :-)

Something interesting in this game is the trap at the very last move !

27. ... Re6 !? .. now White could have played 28.Qd8+ ? (Fritz +2.00) and the game was probably a draw, but John did it well 28.Qf8+ !! (+0.00) and the game is definitely won.
