0 I don't know about others, and this isn't necessarily connected with the Philidor proper, but, I've begun playing 1...d6 against both 1.e4 and 1.d4, and then after White follows up with the next two-square center thrust pawn move, after my 2...Nf6, on either 3.Nc3 or 3.Bd3 (what else is there for White that is any good?), I proceed with 3...e6!? which I have dubbed the "Active Hippo" ;) And it can transpose into many other lines, including a Philidor-type formation, not to mention, a Sicilian .. Hope that helps, somewhat ALSO, an ...e6 move might be indicated after a White f4. For instance, 1.e4 d6 2.f4 Nf6 3.Nc3 e6 4.d4, with extensive Stockfish 18 analysis -- i'm a "centaur" correspondence expert/master level -- Black's position is tenable and flexible, albeit cramped, after 4...Be7. I've had a centaur game from that position, that proceeded 5.a3?! but what does that really accomplish? I played 5...c5 and secured a draw by move 23 after 6.dxc5 Nxc5 7.e5 Nfe4 8.Nxe4 Nxe4 9.Bd3 Nc5, against an excellent player who has not lost a single game on FICGS, where I play centaur chess. As it turns out, 5.a3?! is only the third choice for White per SF18 at depth of 38+ White's move principled 5th move is 5.Nf3 (on 5.Bd3, again 5...c5 is indicated) 5...0-0 and then after 6.Bd3, again, Black plays 6...c5 (also after 6.a3) with a position with chances for both sides, although, admittedly, with more choices for White to continue to obtain a slight-ish advantage, with play proceeding (after 6.Bd3) 6...c5 7. dxc5 dxc5 8.e5 Nd5 (but now not 9.Ne4 or 9.Nxd5, neither of which are in Stockfish's top two choices) in which case White's f4 is entirely defensible for Black ..
