How to Build a Password-protected Disk I

People who use computer all day will inevitably have some private files. On the Windows platform, there are a lot of software can help us to create a password-protected folder, you can ensure that your private files will not be seen. In fact, On the Mac system, users can also very easily create a private hard disk partition on Mac without do not install any software, it is absolutely safe.
An encrypted disk image works just like a regular disk image but requires a password to open and become available ("mount"). You can move files to or from an encrypted disk image as easily as you can from a non-encrypted disk image.  Within a disk image, you can put anything you want as: files, folders, applications, etc. Once the image file is mounted, you are allowed to access to its contents and you can perform any type of manipulation on the files (copying, editing and saving etc). Now follow this article to create a password-protected private hard disk partition to save your private files.

How to create password-protected disk
Step 1: Go to Disk Utility (Applications -> Disk Utility), then click New Image from the menu bar.

Step 2: Then a new windows will pop-up to prompt you create the new disk. You can enter the Name of Disk into the Save As box, and select a path the save this disk (Select desktop to save is easy for access). You can set the size according to your need, and the Format set as MAC OS Extended (Journaled), Select 256-bit AES encryption from Encryption drop-down box, click Create button.

Step 3: After click the Create button, the system will guide you to the next interface, it will prompt you to set password for the new disk, enter password twice to for the new image disk, and please don’t check the box before Remember password in my keychain.

Now back to the desktop you will see a .dmg disk image, double click it you can open (by enter the password that you created above). You can save any files to this disk, and you can close it when you do not use it. Of course, if you want to cancel this private disk, just copy all files out there and then delete the disk.
Important: If you forget the password, data stored in the encrypted disk image cannot be retrieved. If you have saved the password in the keychain, the password will be available to you there.
