Protestantism

Protestantism is one of the four major divisions within Christianity (the other ones are the Catholic Church, the Eastern Orthodox Church and the Anglican Church traditions). The word comes from the separation from the Roman Catholic Church during the 16th century Protestant Reformation.

There are several Protestant denominations, with different doctrines, but almost every of them include justification by grace through faith (not through works), the priesthood of all believers. They consider the Bible as the authority in matters of faith and order. There were about 340 million Protestants in the world in the early 21st century.

The followers of Martin Luther established the evangelical churches of Scandinavia & Germany. John Knox established an influential Presbyterian communion as the national church in Scotland. Reformed churches in Switzerland were established by John Calvin and a few other people including Huldrych Zwingli.
