Social networks

Who still has no idea of what a social network is, or did not register at a single one yet ?  A social network is a social structure made of nodes (typically a node is an individual, sometimes an organization) and interdependencies between these nodes. These interdependencies can be gathered in different groups, in example friendship, kinship, trade, visions, ideas, financial exchange and so on.

Keeping in touch with the family or connecting to friends you lost contact with is probably the main mission of the major social networks like Facebook that offer publicized updates on our personal lives, private message exchanges and many other tools like blogs.

Business & professional profiles have also become very popular in social networking websites, most websites offer to include your business name and contact information. This is just another tool and another way of finding you, often for free.

Finally some social networks will help in understanding the current trends and fashions.

Here I'll try to present the most successful social networks and their features that I tried to gather in the very new FICGS social network, which includes a powerful search engine to find the people you're looking for.

http://www.ficgs.com/network.html

MySpace is still the most popular social networking website, with about 253 million user accounts, it helps to connect to existing friends and relatives and has become a useful means for networking. With the success, MySpace has become a privilegiated target for spammers, always trying to reach a larger audience.

Facebook is the fastest growing social network with already more than 140 million users, but the best part is that many are really actives. No doubt that the domain name was an important part in this success. Facebook includes a custom API that allows third party developers to create unique applications for use within the site, that's the real point that gives Facebook a "plus" and makes it different from any other social network service nowadays.

Hi5 Networks is another social network with more than 80 million users, that helps to keep in touch with old friend and family, it also provides "a platform for established artists, underground talent, and everyday people to all gain prominence amongst a worldwide audience".

Orkut is a social networking website operated by Google and counts more than 67 million users. It helps to find people who share the same hobbies and interests, who look for romantic connections or who want to establish new business contacts. It also enables community creation for persons sharing common interests, promoting online discussion in a forum-like manner.

Friendster used to be the greatest social network on the web, before the growing of MySpace & Facebook. Now with over 90 million users, its primary focus is always to help people to keep in touch with friends, classmates, family and people sharing similar interests.

LinkedIn, with over 30 million users, is a major social network for business & professional profiles, with specific features.

http://www.ficgs.com/network.html
