How to set a server's clock ?

Hello,

I just would like to know the difference between the software clock (that is also the PHP clock changed by the Linux command date MMDDhhmm) and the hardware clock.

I just used this command (/sbin/hwclock --utc) to set the hardware clock to the software clock, but I don't know what's the use of this hardware clock...

Also what is the difference between UTC and local time ?
