Difference between DVD-R and DVD+R

Hello, I would like to know the real difference between DVD-R and DVD+R as the storage capacity is obviously the same. I know this is a question of norms by the manufacturer but where is the real difference on the disc itself?

I also read that DVD-R was more reliable than DVD+R, is it true and why?  Do you have more problems when you write on DVD+R than on the other ones?

Finally, which ones do you prefer and why?
