Pope Benedict XVI was in Paris yesterday, today in Lourdes, this is his first visit in France. Benedict XVI is not well known by french people yet.
Benedict XVI (Latin: Benedictus XVI, Italian: Benedetto XVI, French: Benoît XVI, German: Benedikt XVI, born Joseph Alois Ratzinger on 16 April 1927) is the 265th and reigning Pope, so the spiritual head of the Roman Catholic Church (Sovereign of the Vatican City State), he is a respected Roman Catholic theologian and defender of traditional Catholic doctrine and values, he succeeded Pope John Paul II.

Le pape Benoît XVI effectue sa première visite en France, hier à Paris (à l'Elysée, au collège des Bernardins devant un parterre d'artistes et d'intellectuels, des représentants du monde musulman, les anciens présidents de la République Jacques Chirac et Valéry Giscard d'Estaing, le maire de Paris, Bertrand Delanoë, et d'autres personnalités politiques, enfin à la cathédrale Notre-Dame), aujourd'hui à Lourdes, une visite très discutée en partie à cause de son coût, celui grosso modo d'une visite de chef d'état classique, et que l'état français assume en partie.
Encore mal connu des français, c'est là une opportunité pour lui de se faire "un nom" en France, mais les journalistes se reprennent encore parfois en l'appelant "Jean.. Benoît 16". L'ombre de son prédécesseur Jean-Paul II planera sans doute encore longtemps au-dessus de lui.
Le Conseil national des associations familiales laïques (Cnafal) dénonce néanmoins "l'intrusion permanente dans le champ politique" de la religion depuis que Nicolas Sarkozy a investi l'Elysée, Nicolas Sarkozy qui, selon eux, "porte atteinte à la séparation de l'Eglise et de l'Etat".
Benoît XVI déclarait sur la laïcité et la séparation de l'Église et de l'État : « Ce courant de pensée souhaite que la vie publique ne soit pas touchée par la réalité chrétienne et religieuse. Une telle séparation, que je qualifierais de “profanité” absolue, serait certainement un danger pour la physionomie spirituelle, morale et humaine de l'Europe. » « La distinction entre ce qui est à César et ce qui est à Dieu (cf. Mt 22, 21), à savoir la distinction entre État et Église ou, comme le dit le concile Vatican II, l'autonomie des réalités terrestres, appartient à la structure fondamentale du christianisme. L'État ne peut imposer la religion, mais il doit en garantir la liberté, ainsi que la paix entre les fidèles des différentes religions. De son côté, l'Église comme expression sociale de la foi chrétienne a son indépendance et, en se fondant sur sa foi, elle vit sa forme communautaire, que l'État doit respecter. Les deux sphères sont distinctes, mais toujours en relation de réciprocité. » (encyclique Deus Caritas est).
