Why do we need medical billing and coding companies and would our life be easier or more difficult without them?
To get a better picture in answering that question, we should think about what happens from the moment we walk into a physician’s office.
Such sessions would typically start by patients telling the doctor what they think is wrong with them. The doctor would then perform some, or series of, initial examinations to see if the causes of the discomfort or illness can be determined. The physician would then either prescribe some medicine, or refer the patient to a lab or a specialist for more advanced exams, or any combination of those.
But what happens once the patient leaves the physician’s office that is important. The doctor –and the pharmacist, for that matter – need to communicate with an insurance company so they can get paid for the differential between what the patient paid directly and what the doctor and the pharmacist would have charged ordinarily.

Running logistical, financial, clinical, administrative, and operational aspects of a medical or ambulatory practice is complicated, technical and time consuming. The medical profession as a whole is already complaining about increasing number of patients they have to see to meet with the increasing cost of running their business.
As those complaints grow even louder as time goes by because more Americans get older and will have more medical needs, medical billing and coding companies will become even more important.
