| First Look at Smartwatch with Eye Tracking Capability (2015-03-23) Eye tracking sounds more like science fiction. But, the technology is not that far off from reality. The tech first caught steam with games such as the new Assassin’s Creed and is now looking to make its way in the smartwatch arena. I’m sorry to break this to you but telling the time and reading the pulse isn’t going to cut it anymore Smartwatch. And this is why? A company called EyeTribe has recently showcased its new amazing technology that could shape the way Google Watch and Apple Watch of today are used in the not-so-distant future. The Mobile World Congress which was held recently at Barcelona showcased some amazing new technology which would all one day lead to making the Internet of Things a reality. But, the one device that caught everyone’s eye during the event was new emerging wearable tech which combines the smarts of smartwatches with eye tracking technology. EyeTribe has already been working on eye tracking technology which is used in PCs and tablets and has now decided to make a break for the wearables market. According to EyeTribe CEO, Sune Alstrup, extending the eye tracking technology to smartwatches seems natural since it will make it easier for users to manage the applications on their smartwatch. For instance, combining their eye-tracking technology with a smartphone’s accelerometer would allow the smartwatch to turn on only when you look at it, which would consequently conserve battery life and lead to a device that wouldn’t need to be charged every day, as is the case with most smartwatches today. But that’s not the only reason why eye-tracking technology is big news for the wearable market. Smartwatches having the technology would allow users to switch through different applications on their smartwatch by using only their eye movement. This could prove to be extremely handy for those users of the smartwatch who may have larger fingers which makes it harder to tap the small icons on a small screen. It could also help those who can’t use their hand to navigate through their apps and the features of the smartwatch. While these reasons don’t seem to be that problematic to many of us, EyeTribe does insist that the technology could help many people do find it hard to navigate the apps on their smartwatches. Eye-tracking technology has many uses in the real world, from being used in gaming consoles to being used by those who are disabled, but blending the technology with a smartwatch could be the beginning of a new immersive wearable experience for the users. According to EyeTribe, eye-tracking technology can be used in a number of applications that are categorized as active and passive. While active applications involves controlling hardware such as aiming in video game or typing hands-free, passive applications of the eye-tracking technology includes carrying out performance analysis of layouts designs and advertising etc. Some of the other uses of eye-tracking technology is performing medical diagnosis and automobile safety. While the smartwatch prototype of the new technology was still in its early stages, we can’t wait to see what’s in store for the wearable market next especially when it comes to the Google Watch and Apple Watch devices. | Become a fan |
