Tips for treating a claw toe   (2013-09-20)

A claw toe is a toe that gets contracted at the middle and end joints in the toe. It is often a result of nerve damage which is caused when the muscles of your foot lose its strength. Having a claw toe means that the toe gets dug in the sole of your shoe. It gets worse when left untreated.

The patients suffering from claw toes often complain that they have problems in moving the foot and toe pain. Another visible symptom is when the shape of the foot gets deformed. The toes get bent upwards from the joints. Depending upon these symptoms there are two types of claw toes. One is flexible which can be cured easily whereas the other one is rigid. In case of the rigid claw toe, the movement of the foot is very limited and extremely painful.

The most common cause of a claw toe is a result of muscular imbalance which makes the ligaments and the tendons tighter than their normal state. Arthritis can also be a cause of claw toe. It is usually caused by weak foot muscles. Some other causes may include diabetes, taking excessive alcohol, spinal cord problems, etc.

If the treatment of claw toe is begun in an early stage, it can be easily cured. The most important cure to this disease is changing the type of footwear which you wear. Make sure that the shoe you choose has a soft and wide toe area. It is so because such a shoe would provide enough space for the forefoot area and would hence avoid the friction. It is also advisable to use products like toe crests. It would help in holding the claw toe and would provide relief to the forefoot. It is very important to make sure that the forefoot is not exposed to friction by any way.

Doing exercises for strengthening the toe muscles can also be helpful. You can also use your hands to stretch your toes and toe joints to bring them to their normal position. However if the problem is still persistent, surgical measures can also be adopted.

Any foot problem which causes pain and discomfort even after taking the primary treatments should be given prompt tension. It is advisable to seek advice from an experienced therapist who can evaluate and then cure the problem. You should never ignore the symptoms visible as these can lead to several higher risk problems like breakage of tissues or infection in the feet or the entire leg.
