Common electrical wiring mistakes   (2013-08-20)

Do you often experience electricity related issues in your office or home. If it is so then your electrical wiring is faulty. In this article  Electrician Rochester will highlight some of the most common electrical wiring mistakes that are been made.

Connections outside electrical boxes

Junction boxes protect the connections from accidental damage due to sparks, heat from a loose connection or short circuit. Often it would be seen that wires are hanging unattended on the wall or simply unattended. Rochester Electriciansuggests that an electrical box is essential for accumulating and insulating wires in a safe manner.

Wires too short

If Wires are of exact length as the wall then it can be dangerous. Always have some clearance or additional wire left there. It will not only protect from any mishap but will be of great use in future as well.

Unprotected plastic-sheathed cable

Rochester Electrician Pittsford says that this is a serious issue. At times it can be observed that wires are exposed from the framing used for insulation. That can be dangerous because of the wire is in reach of children, can lead to a big accident costing you even your kid’s life.

Wire around the ceilings must be properly fitted since any dangling wire can cause accidental damage.

Improper outlets and switches support

Loose switches or outlets can look bad, but worse, they’re dangerous as well. Loosely connected outlets can move around, causing the wires to loosen from the terminals. Loose wires can arc and overheat, creating a potential fire hazard.

Cable Installation without using clamps

Cables are not protected unless it is provided support across the electrical passage or path. Using appropriate number of clamps to avoid the dangling of wires and thus gives the frames proper space to insulate them.

Installing a three-slot outlet without a ground wire

We often replace our two slot outlet with three slot outlet to be able to use it for our three pin appliance. But we forget that when we switch to three slot outlet we also need to check for its ground wire. This can lead to electrical shocks. Rochester Electrician says that get the grounding of wire checked via testers available in the market to be on the safer end.

Overfilling of electrical boxes

Too many wires stuffed into a box can cause dangerous overheating, short-circuiting and fire. The National Electrical Code specifies minimum box sizes to reduce this risk.

Recessing boxes behind the wall surface

It is better to insulate the electrical boxes from the wall it’s installed on. It is necessary to avoid any sort of fire hazard if the wall could be susceptible to fire which could be caused due to over heading of wires, short circuit or sparking.

Wiring a GFCI in improper manner

GFCI (ground fault circuit interrupter) outlets protect you from a lethal shock by shutting off the power when they sense slight differences in current. There two pair of terminals, one pair, labeled “line,” is for incoming power for the GFCI outlet and the other set is labeled “load” which provides protection for downstream outlets. Rochester Electrician says that if you mix up the line and load connections you would end up losing the shock protection.
