As you can see, the total number of players (chess, Go & poker holdem included) increased more slowly until 2017 than it used to from 2006 to 2010. That was before the FICGS chess applications for Android, then the launch of the Chess Trainer on Facebook.
Correspondence chess does not attract all players of the world, particularly when chess engines like Stockfish, Komodo or Houdini are authorized, which is considered as cheating by many of them. But the aim here is not to gather all kind of players, it is well known that it is not possible to please everyone. Here, all databases and engines are authorized, many players are so called centaurs.
Finally, FICGS got APPs to play on mobile phones to attract more casual players. At the end, FICGS remains recognized as a major chess organization, different from most internet chess servers and makes its possible to be the place for the highest level chess, and a peaceful & constructive community as well.
Despite of the many successes of chess engines over humans, it seems that the global popularity of online chess did not change for years. Internet chess remains lots of fun, but it is probable that correspondence chess (played at very long time controls, like 30 days + 1 day per move) has become less interesting for many players since that the part of human analysis significantly decreased in terms of pertinence, even for the very best players of the world, compared to the computers one. In a way, correspondence chess may have melted with freestyle chess.
Also, the number of running games indicates that Go (weiqi, baduk) and Poker holdem attract more and more players, probably because of their bigger complexity. Anyway, soon or later, AlphaZero & newer artificial intelligences will undoubtly beat all humans in every cards and board games, maybe even in sports too very soon. Fortunately, this does not make chess, Go & poker less fun & interesting to learn and play.
