If you were to start up EA Sports' "College Football 25" and select the South Carolina team, you might notice the absence of a key player: senior running back Juju McDowell, the team's top returner at the position. This situation is expected to change soon. McDowell mentioned at South Carolina’s media day that he faced issues accessing his account to sign up for the game, which delayed his inclusion. However, once EA Sports verifies his identity, he will be added to the game roster.
Athletes were invited to opt into the game via an email sent in February, with a deadline in April for inclusion at launch. Over 14,000 players signed up, each receiving $600 and a copy of the game valued at $70. McDowell confirmed his rewards are on the way.
Despite not being in the game yet, McDowell has been playing "College Football 25" with his real-life teammates, choosing to explore other teams across the country. During a recent Gamecock Club tournament, freshman offensive lineman Torricelli Simpkins emerged as the champion, possibly providing a future challenge for McDowell.
The South Carolina running back room features McDowell and several other players, including sophomore Djay Braswell, freshman Matthew Fuller, and transfer players Raheim “Rocket” Sanders (Arkansas), Oscar Adaway III (North Texas), and Jawarn Howell (South Carolina State). McDowell describes the environment as a brotherhood, with the players helping each other towards their common goal as preseason practices begin.
"College Football 25" has been out for less than two weeks and has already achieved remarkable success. EA Sports reported that the game welcomed five million unique players in its first week, with over 500,000 participating in the EA Play trial. The game has generated $500 million in sales, a significant achievement for EA Sports.
The original EA college football series ran from 1998 to 2013, but was discontinued due to lawsuits, most notably from former UCLA basketball player Ed O’Bannon. The lawsuits argued that the NCAA violated antitrust laws by not allowing athletes to share in revenues generated from the use of their NIL (name, image, and likeness) in broadcasts and video games.
Now, "College Football 25" marks the first time athletes are being compensated for their NIL in the game. More than 14,000 college football players opted in, surpassing EA's goal of 85 players per roster. EA Sports CEO Andrew Wilson highlighted the game’s successful launch and emphasized the company's focus on delivering bigger and more connected experiences.
This renewed success is a significant milestone, considering the game last sold in 2013, with about 1.5 million copies sold at the time. The current version of the game is designed to allow for updates to rosters throughout the season, ensuring that players like McDowell can be added as issues are resolved.
Meanwhile, Houston Christian University (HCU) is appealing a U.S. District Court decision denying its motion to intervene in the House v. NCAA antitrust case. The settlement, if certified, would see the NCAA and 32 Division I conferences pay $2.8 billion in damages over 10 years and permit schools to share up to $22 million annually with athletes. This settlement also aims to resolve two other antitrust cases against the NCAA.

The developers of FC 25 have expressed a positive outlook towards the emergence of new competition in the soccer video game market, especially amid speculations about a new FIFA game being developed.
EA Sports abandoned the FIFA license in 2022 and launched its new FC series with FC 24 in 2023. However, the FIFA series is anticipated to return with a different developer, rumored to be 2K, which is partnering with FIFA. In May, FIFA president Gianni Infantino confirmed a new FIFA game is in progress, stating:
"We will develop a new e-game, because (the) football simulation game is called FIFA. For hundreds of millions of children around the world, when they play (a) football simulation game, they play FIFA. It cannot be named something else. We are developing with new partners a new game which obviously, as everything we do, will be the best. So get ready for the new FIFA e-game."
2K, owned by Take-Two Interactive, is already known for its successful annual sports games, including the NBA 2K series. The new FIFA game might be launched under the 2K banner, potentially titled FIFA 2K.
During an FC 25 reveal event at EA Sports’ Vancouver headquarters, IGN spoke with Karthik Venkateshan, Line Producer on the Ultimate Team mode, and Richard Walz, Game Design Director on Ultimate Team, regarding the potential new FIFA game from a major AAA publisher.
Venkateshan responded:
"Yes. As creatives, it's always so interesting to see how other people are approaching the same problem spaces that we're approaching, how they are interpreting football, how they want to solve the same things for other players. And I don't know, it energizes me as a football fan myself."
Walz added:
"I agree. And as a player as well, I think it can only be a great thing for our players in our community. Yeah, that's great."
Sam Rivera, Lead Gameplay Producer, echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing that competition is beneficial:
"We welcome competition. I think it's good for everyone to see what other football simulation engines can do. Absolutely. What I can tell you is that creating a deep simulation experience like a football simulation experience, it takes a long time. It takes many, many years of polishing, balancing. We literally every year check in thousands of changes based on community feedback and improvements that we want to make to the game. All that just doesn't appear from scratch. You need to build it over the years. So what we have done over the last 15, 20 years for us, we're very happy with our game and we'll continue."
EA Sports has dominated the football video game market for years, especially with the struggles of Konami's Pro Evolution Soccer series, which rebranded to eFootball with mixed results. Facing competition from a new FIFA series by a different developer might be unusual for EA Sports developers, but as Walz suggested, it will ultimately benefit the players. EA Sports is often criticized for failing to justify the $70 cost of its annual releases, with some suggesting a free-to-play model with paid expansions would be better. The new FIFA game could shake up the market and challenge EA Sports to innovate further.
