This is where Runewords come in D2R Items. Like all the gems you'll see, Runes may be placed in sockets for beneficial effects. But if specific runes are included in items in a specific order, you'll be able to activate a Runeword.

You can find Runeword lists online from the original game however, a key thing to note is that they're only compatible with items that have gray text. For example magical items, marked by their blue text do not work with Runewords. But the statistics of the item remain important for making the most of a Runeword So don't get too quick to insert runes into the first item with sockets that you see.
In the initial game, farming Countess in Act 1 is a good strategy to obtain runes. This can help build some of the lower-level Runewords, such as Stealth (Tal + Eth; adds to mana recovery, speed of movement, recovery, and many other things) in addition to Buy D2R items PC Leaf (Tir + Ral, which provides a number of skills useful to a Sorceress).
