The Wandering Ancient was the most loved choice (2022-12-15)
At BlizzConline I spoke to WoW WoTLK Gold the game's principal designer Jeremy Feasel about this mount and how it came to be created as well as the reasons it's so special, and how it connects to the wider lore.

Blizzard released a player survey a while ago, asking players what they'd love to get from a new mount, allowing them to decide what the mount is. The idea was working closely with the community in an innovative way to help players feel a greater sense of connection towards Azeroth and to the World of Warcraft universe. Some other options that were offered in the survey were the giant book you can ride on, a kitty cat made of jelly caterpillar as well as an unsettling spider.
The Wandering Ancient was the most loved choice according to Feasel. "By the largest margin everywhere, riding a giant walking tree was the winner," he said.
Fans of The Lord of the Rings are likely familiar with big walking trees with the Ents however, the Ancients are also a central part of World of Warcraft lore and Night Elves specifically.
"There's the legend of being able to ride on top of a huge tree," Feasel said about the way in which giant walking trees in films like The Lord of the Rings. "But it's also true that Night Elves have this long and rich lore of ancient protectors , and ... It is all the way back to World of Warcraft. It seems like there's some of the player base that's always wanted to ride one of those things. They finally achieved buy WoTLK Gold their goal."
