It's recommended in some places to choose a domain name without hyphens... My question : Why ??

I'm to buy a new domain name .com , my question : My website will treat 'subcategory' subject, which is a subcategory of general subject (of course)... To obtain the best results in search engines, should my domain name be :
www.general.com
www.subcategory.com
www.general-subcategory.com
www.general.com/subcategory
subcategory.general.com
the same with .net , .co.uk , .org ...
